Service to…
The academy often concentrates power and excludes diverse voices, especially as it pertains to natural resource management. In addition to being wrong, this systemic failure to include diverse voices hinders our society’s ability to intelligently respond to the Anthropocene.
For these reasons, I use my educational and skin color privilege, combined with my life history as a gender queer, blue-collar scholar, to support and encourage diversity in the academy. I do this through service, teaching, and research.
My Department
Founding Director of the Geography Program
I recently established a new Geography Minor at Manhattan College, a course of study that focuses on human and environmental interactions. I developed the entire curriculum, established program learning objectives, and successfully applied for college- and New York State-level approval.
My College
Multiple Advisory Boards
At the college level, I serve on Advisory Boards for Peace Studies, Digital Arts and Humanities, and the Center for Urban Resilience and Environmental Sustainability. In these positions, I lend my interdisciplinary perspective to student activities, programmatic decisions, and community engagement.
My Profession
Chair of the Feminist Geography Specialty Group
I serve my profession by peer-reviewing proposed articles for respected journals and serving on Advisory Boards for grants and interdisciplinary projects, such as Visualizing the Data of the Eighteenth-Century French Caribbean through the City University of New York.
